Vision, Mission and Values:

A Mission statement helps the organisation articulate why they exist, and what is the purpose they serve in society. Mission statements, when framed through participative processes, can become a glue to holding people in the organisation together, as being in touch with the fundamental purpose of their organisation can be inspirational, giving people energy and enthusiasm to deal with their day-to-day realities cheerfully.

Organisational Visioning is perhaps one of the most difficult processes. Looking into the future is often discouraged as being too 'dreamy', impractical and unrealistic. However, being a visionary is far from all of these and is in fact the ability to chart out a path which takes into accounts all these realities.

The visioning process is considerably aided when the articulation of values begins. The 'what' is supported by the 'how' and the organisations begins to gain confidence in 'what' they want to achieve. While the vision statement is definitely likely to sound esoteric and profound, the values tell the story of how people will act in moving towards the vision.

The work on vision and values is grounded in valuing human beings - their aspirations and needs. Our model of aligning people to organisational values therefore focuses on what values each individual wants for herself / himself, and finding areas of alignment between those individual values and the stated organisational values. This journey at both the individual and organisational levels lays a very strong foundation for growth and any change process. As an outcome, there emerges clarity about what is sacred (and hence non-negotiable) and what may be open to change.
